Screening of Iosif Vardakis’ (2023) AKOE – AMFI: The Story of a Revolution (*Just to sleep on their chest…)
A proposed law on sexually transmitted diseases in 1977 prompts a group of friends to establish AKOE (the Greek Homosexual Liberation Movement). The organization, together with its magazine AMFI, soon becomes a vital hub for meeting, organizing, sharing information, and building solidarity within Greece’s then largely invisible and unorganized LGBTQI+ community, as it confronts state repression, social exclusion, and the AIDS epidemic. Through the testimonies of the generation that built it, Iosif Vardakis’s documentary traces the birth and early years of the LGBTQI+ movement in Greece.
This event is co-sponsored by the SNFPHI and by the Institute for the Study of Sexuality and Gender.
Seating is limited. Registration closes at NOON on Monday, November 30th. If you do not have a Columbia ID, you will receive a QR code to access the campus.
