Volcanic Identity
Iria Vrettou (Fulbright Fellow- Columbia University)
Respondent, Angeliki Spiropoulou (University of the Peloponnese; Fulbright Fellow- Columbia University)

In this seminar Fulbright Visiting Artist Iria Vrettou charts the development of their research on volcanoes, from their initial visit to the island of Nisyros and their encounters with geology and queer theory, to the making of animations and performances exploring geological formations as sources of destruction and regeneration and as portals to other worlds. Drawing on field recordings, drawings, film, and performance, Vrettou explores how volcanoes enable us to imagine an artistic language structured around themes of explosion, eruption, and metamorphosis and, ultimately, rethink queer identity from the point of view of a natural phenomenon.

This seminar is co-sponsored by the SNFPHI. Registration closes at NOON on Wednesday, March 26th. If you do not have a Columbia ID, you will receive a QR code to access Faculty House.
